Properly Performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

How to Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Whether you’re professionally trained or not, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can help to save a life during a cardiac or respiratory emergency. However, it is critical that you know the right steps in order to help someone in need. Here’s what you should know.

Before Doing CPR

Before administering CPR, it is essential that you remember to do the following steps:

  • Assess the scene to ensure it’s safe.
  • Tap the affected person’s shoulder and ask them if they’re okay.
  • Dial 911 for emergency assistance if the person needs help.
  • Send someone to get an AED if there is one nearby.
  • If an AED is available, use it to check the person’s heart rhythm.
  • Open the person’s airway by tilting their head back slightly and lifting their chin.
  • Check for signs of breathing, listening carefully for no more than 10 seconds.

CPR Steps

If the affected person displays no signs of breathing, it is time to begin CPR, following these steps:

Chest Compressions

Place your hands, one on top of another, in the center of the chest. Using your body weight, administer compressions that are delivered at least 2 inches deep. Maintain a pace of 100 compressions per minute.

Rescue Breaths

With their head tilted back and their chin up, pinch their nose shut and place your mouth around their mouth. Blow into the person’s mouth with enough force to make their chest rise. After delivering two rescue breaths, return to administering chest compressions.

Repeat

Continue switching between administering chest compressions and rescue breaths the person begins breathing again on their own or emergency personnel arrive on the scene.
